US Doppler Radar: Weather Radar in Motion

The depiction of precipitation on radar can sometimes seem disconnected from what's happening on the ground. This phenomenon occurs because a significant amount of activity takes place between 0 and 5,000 feet, which is outside the radar beam's scope. To illustrate this concept, imagine a circle representing the Earth with a straight line extending from a point on its surface into space. As the line moves further away from the circle, it becomes increasingly removed from the ground.

Similarly, when using Doppler radar to track precipitation, the farther away the radar beam travels from the tower, the farther it is from the ground. This fundamental constraint of radar data can be challenging to work with, especially when trying to understand complex weather patterns.

However, advanced Doppler radar technology has enabled us to gather high-resolution data that provides a more accurate representation of atmospheric conditions. With this data, we can identify features such as sea breeze and outflow boundaries that standard resolution radar may miss altogether. The US is home to over a hundred radar towers located across the country, providing a vast network of data collection points.

Some of these radar towers include Lake Murray in Ardmore, Oklahoma (WeatherOK, USA), which has been monitoring weather patterns since 2004. Additionally, the system provides base reflectivity data dating back to 1991, as well as real-time and archived lightning data worldwide.

The US Doppler radar network also offers a range of forecasting tools, including forecast ensemble heatmaps that allow users to visualize up to seven different models and their corresponding runs over a period of 46 days. Other features include forecast XL, which provides graphed and tabulated data for up to 10 days, as well as the ability to choose from multiple models.

In addition to these advanced forecasting tools, users can also access 14-day forecasts, meteograms (graphing weather conditions over a three- to five-day period), and weather overviews that provide detailed information on current and future weather patterns. The system even includes Tropical cyclone tracks from the ECMWF/Ensemble model.
